Throwback to 2008: Shmooz Lands in Dunfermline

Let’s rewind the clock to 2008, a big year for us at Shmooz. Three years after opening our very first store in the charming coastal town of St Andrews, we took the next exciting step in our journey: launching our second store in Dunfermline.

Back then, we were still a young and growing brand, but we knew it was time to branch out. Dunfermline, with its mix of history, community spirit, and buzzing high street (at the time, perhaps), felt like the perfect fit. So with a collection of our best streetwear, denim, and trainers, we expanded into the Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

Our first Dunfermline store wasn’t quite the space we’re in today; It was actually a much smaller unit. But what we lacked in square footage, we made up for in passion and personality. That little store quickly became a hub for local shoppers looking for something different, something with a bit more edge and individuality.

What really made those early days special, though, were the people. Shmooz has always been about more than just the clothes - it’s about community. If you shopped with us back then, chances are you were served by one of the many familiar faces who helped bring the store to life.

Gail, our brilliant manager at the time, led the team with style, warmth, and serious retail know-how. Reflecting on her time at Shmooz, she shared:

"Wow, where would I start with my time at Shmooz! The initial opening was a great day, although there were a few stressful days on the build-up. However, the people of Dunfermline turned up to show support and have continued to do so since. It was the best 13 years, with the best company; and I'm so proud to see the younger staff build their own careers now - so proud of you all!"

Alongside Gail were some unforgettable team members who brought energy and personality to every shift: Dan, Ellie, Jen, Sean, Craig, Sarah, Natalie, Ryan, Gregor, Katie plus Fraser and Erin (who are now happily married!). Whether you came in for the latest drop or just a friendly chat, chances are you were welcomed by one of them.

Looking back, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come; from that tight-knit retail space to the larger, modern store we now call home (more on that tomorrow). But the spirit of those early days still lives on in everything we do.

To everyone who’s been part of our Dunfermline story, staff and customers alike, thank you. You helped shape Shmooz into what it is today.
