We sat with the best...

Every business has those moments that define its journey; moments when all the hard work, long nights, and leaps of faith are validated in ways you never quite expect. For us at Shmooz, one of those unforgettable moments came in 2006 when we were named a finalist in the prestigious Drapers Awards for Best New Business.

At the time, we were still a relatively new and small operation based in the heart of St Andrews. A passionate, independent fashion retailer with big ideas, a love for style, and an even bigger dream: to make our mark in an industry dominated by giants. So when we got the call saying we’d made it to the finals of the Drapers Awards, it honestly felt surreal.

The event itself was nothing short of spectacular. Held at the iconic Grosvenor House in London, the evening was a true celebration of the UK’s fashion and retail elite. Hosted by the sharp-witted comedian Jimmy Carr, the night was filled with laughter, glamour, and a sense of awe as we rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in the business - Marks and Spencer, ASOS, Gant, G-Star, Sainsbury’s - national and international heavyweights, no less!

No, we sadly didn’t take home the trophy that night. And yes, Ian had far too much of the free champagne and was sent to bed early. But, the experience was far more than a win, it was recognition. It was being seen. It was validation that our little brand, born out of a love for fashion and community, had earned a seat at the table.

Sitting in that grand ballroom, surrounded by the best in the business, was a humbling and motivating experience. It reminded us of how far we’d come and how far we still wanted to go.

Here’s to the journey and to never forgetting the milestones that shape us.
