The Finnish Legend Who Sold the Three Stripes!
We’re proud to introduce Karhu to our footwear line-up. This is a brand that offers far more than just a great sneaker; it offers over a century of genuine sports history, a unique Scandinavian design aesthetic, and arguably the greatest trademark story in business history.
Karhu (pronounced "Kar-hoo," meaning "Bear" in Finnish) is a legend that deserves your attention.
1. The Undisputed History: From Javelins to Olympic Gold (1916–1952)
Karhu was established in Helsinki, Finland, in 1916. Starting as a small workshop named Oy Urheilutarpeita (Sports Equipment Ltd.), they crafted gear from locally sourced birch, including skis, javelins, and track spikes.
-
The "Flying Finns": In the 1920s, Finnish athletes became an international force, dominating long-distance running. They were dubbed the "Flying Finns," and they wore Karhu spikes, giving the brand worldwide recognition. Olympic legend Paavo Nurmi won five gold medals in the 1924 Paris Olympics wearing Karhu shoes.
-
A Symbol of Dominance: By the 1940s, Karhu used a distinctive three-stripe design on their shoes as a mark of quality and speed. This was their signature branding, proudly worn by their championship athletes.
2. The Greatest Deal Ever: The Three-Stripes Story
Following the success of the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where Karhu-wearing athletes secured 15 gold medals, the German shoe company founded by Adolf "Adi" Dassler (now known as adidas) approached Karhu.
Karhu agreed to sell their three-stripe trademark to the growing German company for the equivalent of just €1,600 and two bottles of good whisky.
While adidas went on to build a global empire on that famous logo, Karhu simply switched their branding to the iconic M-symbol (the "M" stands for Mestari, the Finnish word for "Champion") and continued their legacy of technical innovation.
3. Why Karhu is a Great Choice Today
Choosing Karhu isn't just about sporting a cool retro look; it's about connecting with a brand that stayed true to its technical roots and Scandinavian design philosophy.
-
Authentic Heritage: Unlike many "heritage" brands, Karhu was literally at the forefront of running technology, pioneering innovations like the Air Cushion midsole in the 1970s and the forward-propelling Fulcrum Technology in the 1980s.
-
The Aesthetic: Karhu's sneakers are known for their beautiful, unique colour palettes, often taking inspiration from the Finnish landscape and seasons. They have a distinctive, often subtle colour-blocking that is currently defining the global sneaker trend.
-
Exclusivity: While the brand has a cult following, it offers a refreshing alternative to the saturated market of larger heritage brands, giving you a sneaker that stands out.
